MOURINHO LEAVING BLUES LEGACY
Jose Mourinho is confident Chelsea's transfer policy of signing superstars alongside emerging prospects will preserve their position at the summit of English football.
Michael Ballack and Andriy Shevchenko - two of the biggest names in world football - have both arrived at Stamford Bridge this summer but Mourinho has also made sure that he has provided for the future of the club by bringing more talented youngsters to the club as well.
The Portuguese has swooped for talented African pair Salomon Kalou, 20, and Jon Obi Mikel, 19, to safeguard Chelsea’s long-term future.
“We’ve made some really top signings for next season, champions like Michael Ballack and Andriy Shevchenko,” said Mourinho.
“They have great status which they will bring to our team of champions.
“But we also have young boys like Salomon Kalou and Jon Obi Mikel, players with big potential.
“I have also signed a top professional in goalkeeper Hilario who has a big history with me in Portugal.”
The Chelsea boss is confident that his summer's work will be enough to deliver an unprecedented third Barclays Premiership title.
“We are a team of champions and as champions we have high expectations at the start of every season,” said Mourinho.
“We triumphed for the second time in the Premiership last season but we must keep moving on to the next level in everything we do.
“I have high hopes for the new season with two Premiership titles already ours.
“Including the FA Community Shield, we are playing for five trophies and we will always play to win every game.
“It isn’t going to be easy, especially as the other teams will be chasing us.”

DUFF POISED FOR TOON SWITCH
Damien Duff is on the brink of a transfer from Chelsea to Newcastle United. The 27-year-old Republic of Ireland winger was undergoing a medical on Friday night, after which the transfer will be completed.
A statement on Newcastle's official website, www.nufc.co.uk, read: “The board of Newcastle United PLC are pleased to announce that contracts have been exchanged with Chelsea Football Club for the transfer of Damien Duff.
“The player, having agreed terms, is currently undergoing a medical.”
Duff came to prominence at Blackburn Rovers and was a £17million signing by Chelsea in 2003.
However, Chelsea’s squad strengthening meant Duff’s place could come under threat next season - with Michael Ballack’s signing adding to the competition for places.
Fellow wide-men Arjen Robben, Joe Cole and Shaun Wright-Phillips have all limited Duff’s first-team opportunities.
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho said earlier in the week: “I like Damien as a player and as a person. I listened to him for a couple of hours and I could understand what he has in his mind.
“After that it becomes business. He’s such a good player we will do good business with another club.”
It is a move which will excite Newcastle’s fans, who have seen captain Alan Shearer retire and club-record striker Michael Owen head off for another long spell in the treatment room.

BLUES ACCEPT DEL HORNO OFFER
Chelsea have accepted an offer from Valencia for defender Asier del Horno.
They have not revealed any details of the fee involved, but Del Horno has travelled to Spain to discuss the deal with the Primera Liga club.
Del Horno, 25, joined the Barclays Premiership champions from Athletic Bilbao for £8million last summer but struggled to hold down a regular place in Jose Mourinho's side.
The imminent sale of the Spain international, who missed this summer's World Cup through injury, could prompt Chelsea to move for another left-back.
Del Horno's departure would leave Wayne Bridge as the only specialised left-back at Stamford Bridge, although France defender William Gallas can play in the position.
Reports have linked the Blues with Arsenal and England’s Ashley Cole, but Mourinho has refused to comment on the speculation, instead highlighting the return of a rejuvenated Bridge from his loan spell at Fulham.
“Ashley Cole is an Arsenal player. It's not correct to say anything about him,” Mourinho said on Thursday.
“We have Wayne Bridge back. His spirit at Fulham was good and it was a good move for him and for us.”
Regarding the situation involving Del Horno, Mourinho added at Thursday’s press conference: “If we sell him we will have a space in our squad. Ashley Cole is a good player but we are being connected with every good left-back in Europe.”

MOURINHO FACES 'IMPOSSIBLE' JUGGLING ACT
Jose Mourinho admits it is 'impossible' to keep all of his Chelsea stars happy and relishes the fact rivals are desperate for the Blues to fail.
Damien Duff revealed on Monday the driving force behind his £5million move to Newcastle United was the lack of first-team opportunities at Stamford Bridge.
Mourinho was reluctant to allow the Republic of Ireland winger's exit and, fearing more unwanted departures might follow, has trimmed his squad to 20 in order to keep everybody satisfied.
But the Chelsea manager, who has signed superstars Michael Ballack and Andriy Shevchenko this summer, admits he is fighting a losing battle.
"It is not easy coaching so many top players. I can't say that every player is happy because at the end of the season we have players who want to leave," he told the New York Times.
"They don’t want to leave to go to a better club, they want to leave because they want to be more happy in football and that means playing more.
"It is impossible to keep everyone happy. This year we will have 20 players on the squad and with a smaller squad I think everyone feels useful."
He added: "Everyone is waiting for Chelsea to fail. It is a great motivation for us. We have signed new players not because we need them to make us champions.
"It is not a question of money for the club or for the players. It is a different kind of mission, a new life challenge."
Chelsea face a Major League Soccer All-Star team on August 5 following a week of training at UCLA, California, on their pre-season trip to the United States.
It will be the third summer in succession that Chelsea have travelled to America, with Mourinho viewing the tours as crucial tools for team-bonding.
"I like coming to the States because of the freedom the players have, which is much different from in Europe," he said.
"It's the beginning of the season and the players need some space, to be able to go for a walk after dinner.
"These are the crucial moments where, as a group, they build relationships, not just go back to their hotel rooms and then see the same players the next day.
"They need to develop communication and the States is a good place for that."
It will be a more aggressive-looking Mourinho who arrives in America this year, however, with the Portuguese sporting a new crew-cut.
But Mourinho also went for the change in the hope it will persuade some of his younger players to abandon their longer style.
"How many people change their haircut for the weather? I also cut my hair for a different reason, because I want to push my kid to do the same," he said.
"And it was hot. Training two times a day, I have no time to spend with long hair. I also want to push the young players on my team to have a proper haircut.
"For me, I changed the look, maybe my face is more aggressive, to prepare myself for football, to be ready for war."

MOURINHO: SHEVCHENKO CAPTURE SIGNIFICANT
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has described the capture of Andriy Shevchenko as an important signing for English football.
The Barclays Premiership champions pulled off their biggest signing in the summer when they acquired the AC Milan striker.
The club fell short of winning the Champions League last season but the colourful Portuguese boss believes the Ukraine international might well be the final piece in the jigsaw.
Mourinho said: “This is a very important signing for English football.
“Everyone wants the best players in the world and now we have got one.
“He's a big, big player. Chelsea are a championship side and we want to be champions again and win things we haven't won before so this makes our team even better than it was.”
The 31-year-old was impressed with his new surroundings and he believes the London giants have a great chance of winning European football's top prize this season.
Shevchenko said: “This is a fantastic group of players - it is a great group of young players as well and not just names.
“There are some great players and a great group and I've noticed a real togetherness within the team and it is my goal to learn English so everybody will accept me.
“It is an objective of this team to win the league again and I would like to help us win the Champions League.
“This was a big decision coming here but most importantly it was important for my family to make the right move.
“It was the right time for this and I felt I was coming to a great club with great players and a great manager.
“It was all part of the package but my family's decision was more important than anybody else's.”
Mourinho also insisted it would not be a disaster if he failed to land another left-back.
The Blues have been strongly linked with a number of names but the Portuguese boss was non-committal regarding their supposed interest.
Wayne Bridge was their only senior left-back to be put through his paces in the sweltering heat of Los Angeles but it appears his immediate future is at Stamford Bridge.
Mourinho refused to answer questions on Bridge but he said: “We will find a solution regarding the left-back position.
“We are looking at options but it is not a disaster if nothing comes of it. We are well enough covered for that position.”
Mourinho pushed his stars to the limit in the Los Angeles heat.
The Blues, including new signings Andriy Shevchenko and Salomon Kalou, and World Cup stars John Terry, Joe Cole, Frank Lampard and Bridge braved 100 degrees temperatures as preparation for the new campaign gathered pace.
It was a tough test for the players after flying round the world but it was a clear indication of Mourinho’s plans.
German star Michael Ballack and Hernan Crespo were absent because of their exertions in the World Cup finals.
Meanwhile, Chelsea skipper John Terry declared he would “desperately love” to succeed David Beckham as England captain.
New England manager Steve McClaren is searching for a leader for his side with David Beckham standing down as captain.
Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has already thrown his hat into the ring while also pledging to support whoever landed the job on a full-time basis.
The Stamford Bridge central defender, who has also had his hopes backed by a number of team-mates, is more than happy to take the armband.
Terry said: “That is a decision for Steve McClaren to make.
“Like every player and like everybody in England who has grown up watching England in the past it would be a dream and I would desperately love to be made captain.
“But it is up to Steve McClaren to make that decision.”

MOURINHO: I CAN MANAGE SUPERSTAR EGOS
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is convinced he can control the huge personalities and egos at the club.
The Portuguese has further swelled his star-studded squad with the captures of Andriy Shevchenko and Michael Ballack this summer.
And Mourinho admits he could have a problem if those players think more about themselves than their team-mates.
But, having won the Barclays Premiership in the last two seasons, the former Porto boss is not worrying about managing his players.
Mourinho said: “It is dependant on egos and personalities.
“If these big players have the desire to win and think that the team is bigger than the individual then it easy to work.
“But if the top players think about themselves more than other things then we have a problem.
“But I want everybody to go in the right direction and put the team in first place. After that I think things are easy.”
Shevchenko, meanwhile, is confident Chelsea now have the ability to lift the Champions League this season.
The former AC Milan frontman said: “Football is very unpredictable.
“There are many great teams, great players and great managers but this team’s objective is to win the Champions League.
“You can’t tell how things are going to turn out but this team has the quality to make it there.”
Mourinho was more than happy to see Shevchenko was a team player as his performances at the World Cup - in skippering Ukraine to the knockout stages - showed.
But he was reluctant to agree that Shevchenko will make the difference between success and failure in Europe for Chelsea.
The Stamford Bridge boss said: “I don’t like to put that kind of pressure on any individual.
“This is about the team and the reason we are champions is because we are a champion team.
“We know Andriy is a big player and has scored goals all his life and he will score goals for Chelsea, no doubt about that.
“I read a few interviews with him in the summer and he said exactly what I said. He said it’s about the team and not individual success.
“He will help bring us more quality and he has the kind of mentality we’re looking for.”
