[glow=red,2,300]Liverpool [/glow]
Liverpool's 2005 Champions League success sealed the club's reputation as one of European football's true greats.
However, the seeds of the Reds' glory was sown long before then. Liverpool won their first league title back in 1901 and added a second just five years later.
1922 and 1923 saw back-to-back league titles, but a long wait for further silverware didn't end until 1947. Indeed the latter part of the Fifties were dark days for Liverpool FC; relegation and a record defeat to Birmingham City only served to compound the misery.
And so it was a 'red letter day' when Bill Shankly walked into Anfield in December 1959. He took a giant broomstick to the club, releasing more than half the squad, and by his third full season in charge, a new-look Liverpool were soon reverting to old ways, securing a return to top flight football that has been retained ever since.
Back among the big boys Liverpool were soon reminding the football world of who they were. In 1964, Liverpool were crowned First Division champions once more, and further success in domestic and European Cup competitions soon followed.
When Shankly stepped aside, he left big shoes to fill. Fortunately for Liverpool fans, his former assistant Bob Paisley was a perfect fit; his nine year reign brought with it an astonishing 21 trophies as Liverpool quite simply swept everyone away. The Reds were crowned three times European champions, setting a new benchmark in the process.
Remarkably, Liverpool continued to appoint from within as Joe Fagan stepped up to succeed Paisley.
Fagan continued their success, though his reign also saw one of the saddest times for the club. 39 supporters, most of them Juventus fans, were killed when a stadium wall collapsed during the European Cup final at Heysel in Belgium.
Liverpool were subsequently banned from European football for ten years, although they served only six of these.
Kenny Dalglish restored happier times for Liverpool, becoming as successful off the pitch as he had been on it. However disaster soon struck again, when on the 15th April 1989, 96 fans were crushed to death during an FA Cup semi final against Nottingham Forest at Hillsborough.
It was the darkest day in English football history, and led to the introduction of all-seater stadia in England.
A succession of managers followed, but Liverpool were in danger of losing their way until the arrival of lifelong French fan Gerard Houllier, who helped the club to a cup treble in 2001.
And the taste for foreign managers has continued. Spaniard Rafa Benitez made his first season at the helm a memorable one with the most dramatic of Champions League victories: a penalty shoot-out win over AC Milan after trailing 3-0 at half time.
Benitez has also enjoyed FA Cup success in one of the most memorable finals in recent history.
