Alonso bullish as Imola beckons San Marino Grand Prix, Sunday 23 April 2006
Fernando Alonso says his Renault team are again the ones to beat at this weekend's San Marino Grand Prix.
The reigning champion, who has won two of the three races so far this season, leads the standings by 14 points.
With team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella winning in Malaysia, Renault are also way ahead in the constructors' table.
"We know Renault is the team to beat at the moment," said the Spaniard. "I am happy with our position and very confident for the coming races."
Alonso claimed victory at Imola last year after narrowly defeating Ferrari's Michael Schumacher.
And he believes Ferrari, with the help of their Bridgestone tyres, will be again challenging this weekend.
"Ferrari and McLaren will be our main opponents," the 24-year-old added.
"Ferrari dropped down in the last two races, but I think they will be back. Their tyres work well at this circuit, and it is their home grand prix, so I expect them to be extremely competitive."
Ferrari have struggled in their last two races, with a fifth and a sixth in Malaysia and two retirements in Melbourne, but Schumacher is confident his team can get back to winning ways.
"I have been part of this world for a long time and it will not drive me crazy," said Schumacher, whose only win last year was at the United States Grand Prix.
"I have already seen other championships completely turned around. The most important thing is that we have the potential and so everything is possible.
"We want to do well at Imola and we want to be among the title challengers.
"We have fine-tuned our package during the tests and I think that we have a car with which we can compete for victory.
"I do not believe that the gap to the leaders is too big to close. Imola should be the first step towards this."

Schumi breaks Senna pole record Michael Schumacher grabbed his 66th career pole position at the San Marino Grand Prix at Imola to break the late Ayrton Senna's all-time record. The German's achievement came at the same track at which Senna had won his final pole, a day before the Brazilian was killed at this event in 1994.
Schumacher's Ferrari set a lap of one minute 22.795 seconds to beat Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello of Honda.
Ferrari's Felipe Massa was fourth ahead of world champion Fernando Alonso.
Senna's pole mark had been the only F1 performance record not held by Schumacher, who has now racked up more wins, championship titles, poles and points than any other driver in history.
Only Italian Riccardo Patrese's achievement of competing in 256 Grands Prix has so far escaped Schumacher, for whom this weekend marks his 233rd F1 race.
A delighted Schumacher said: "With the car we had, getting a pole was sort of obvious, but it is always great to start from pole.
"Obviously it has a special meaning to me but right now there is so much focus on what comes next that I don't pay too much attention to it.
"The record is less important for me - you look at records when you finish racing. I think we can show our very strong race pace."
Englishman Button earned a spot on the front row for the third race in succession but Honda team-mate Barrichello impressed more, shrugging off his poor form so far this season to earn third spot with a time of 1:23.24.
Button said: "We've done a lot of work overnight and really improved. We needed to because we were quite a long way off on Friday. I am much happier with the car now.
"We are reasonably happy we have solved a few of our issues, it's just whether we have solved them all. "I am hoping we have - I wouldn't be here smiling if not. This is only qualifying, tomorrow's the main thing."
Ferrari and Honda's dominance on Saturday left Renault struggling as championship leader Alonso had to settle for fifth while Giancarlo Fisichella slumped out of the second knockout round.
Juan Pablo Montoya led McLaren's efforts, clocking 1:24.021 for seventh, ahead of team-mate Kimi Raikkonen.
Meanwhile Jarno Trulli snuck his Toyota into the final elimination round to claim ninth, while Mark Webber was 10th.
Fisichella was just 0.011secs outside the top 10 and had to watch the pole position shoot-out from the pits as he contemplated an 11th-place start.
Red Bull's David Coulthard also departed at that stage after earning 14th, behind Nico Rosberg who was forced to qualify in his spare car after a crash in practice.
The German avoided a grid penalty because his original engine was fitted into the spare Williams
It was also disappointment for Nick Heidfeld, who lost control of his BMW Sauber and smashed into a tyre wall, leaving him 15th on the grid.
Red Bull's Christian Klien, Scuderia Toro Rosso's Scott Speed, Tiago Monteiro and fellow Midland driver Christijan Albers, as well as Super Aguri's Takuma Sato and Yuji Ide, were all eliminated in the first round of qualifying.

Schumacher repels Alonso attack Michael Schumacher held off a challenge from world champion Fernando Alonso to win the San Marino Grand Prix and re-ignite his championship challenge. The Ferrari driver led comfortably from the start but ran into tyre problems after his first pit stop and had to fight hard to repel Alonso.
Renault failed to grab the lead with an early final stop and Schumacher managed to survive in front to the end.
McLaren's Juan Pablo Montoya was third, with Honda's Jenson Button seventh.
The Englishman was again unable to live up to his qualifying speed.
Button held on to his second-place grid position until he made his first stop on lap 15, five laps before Schumacher and 10 before Alonso.
That put Button on a three-stop strategy compared to the two-stop plan of his major rivals, and he was not a factor in the battle for the lead thereafter.
His hopes were further hit at his second stop, when he pulled away from the pits with the fuel hose still attached to his car.
The nozzle tore away from the hose, forcing the Englishman to stop in the pit lane in order to have it removed before he was able to continue.
The delay cost him a probable third place, leaving him down in fifth and disappointed for the fourth race in a row.
Up at the front, Schumacher appeared to be heading for a comfortable victory until his first stop, after which he suddenly ran into severe tyre problems.
The lack of grip cost him more than a second a lap and meant Alonso was right on his tail by lap 34.
The Spainard tried in vain to find a way past Schumacher for seven laps on a track where it is notoriously difficult to overtake before Renault decided to make a tactical gamble in an attempt to grab the lead.
They brought Alonso in early for his final stop on lap 41, but Ferrari responded immediately by bringing Schumacher in on the next lap, allowing the German to retain his lead.
Renault engineering director Pat Symonds said: "We had enough fuel to go a little bit further, but we weren't sure if it was much further than them - in fact our timings of the stops indicated it wasn't.
"So we decided to get out of Michael's slipstream. We had nothing to lose and perhaps something to gain, but in the end we weren't quick enough on the out lap."
Alonso challenged hard for the last 20 laps but was unable to get past before a mistake on lap 59, when he ran wide at the Villeneuve chicane, gave Schumacher a relatively comfortable final three laps.
The seven-time champion held on to win his first race since last June's US Grand Prix and re-ignite his attempt to win back the world title from his rival.
