Rossi eyes points chase in Turkey Defending MotoGP champion Valentino Rossi aims to put his worst start to a season behind him in Turkey on Sunday. Italian Rossi, 27, won the last race in Qatar for his 54th top-flight victory, but is 14 points adrift of Loris Capirossi in the overall standings.
"Qatar was like the start of my championship but we're already behind in the points and we need to do our best to catch up," he said.
Rossi aims to mark his 100th top-class start with an all-time points record.
He can overtake old rival Max Biaggi, who has scored 2,892, in the list of points scorers from all categories if he finishes ninth or higher.
Rossi, who has not missed a race since his 125cc debut in 1996, has scored 2,886 points in 125cc, 250cc, and 500cc/MotoGP.
The Yamaha rider also admitted he was relishing his return to a track that he has found difficult in the past.
"Istanbul isn't one of my favourite tracks and we had a really hard time there last year," added Rossi, who finished second at Istanbul Park last year.
"We had already won the championship and it was difficult to stay 100% focused at that stage of the season, plus we had some set-up problems with the bike. This time we go there feeling fully motivated."
Capirossi leads Honda's Nicky Hayden by five points but competes in Turkey this weekend with no prior experience of the anti-clockwise Istanbul circuit because he missed last year's race through injury.
"I know nothing about the track," the 33-year-old said.
"Making a rough judgement from the TV, I'd say it could be a nice circuit for me. There are some fast corners and it's very up and down," Capirossi said.
Hayden, 24, is chasing his seventh straight podium, while Spain's Jorge Lorenzo can become the youngest 250cc rider to win three races in a row and compatriot Alvaro Bautista is chasing his hat-trick in the 125cc class.

Melandri clinches Turkish MotoGP Italian Marco Melandri overtook Australian rookie Casey Stoner on the last lap to win the Turkish Grand Prix on Sunday for the second straight year. Stoner, who won last year's 250cc race, led until Honda rider Melandri made his move to claim victory in Istanbul.
American Nicky Hayden was third, followed by world champion Valentino Rossi in his 100th top-class race.
Hayden is the new championship leader by one point, taking over from Italy's Loris Capirossi who finished sixth.
Surprise pole sitter Chris Vermeulen had to settle for seventh after failing to hold off his charging rivals early on in the 22-lap race.
It was also disappointment for Spain's Dani Pedrosa, who crashed out of contention on the final lap, while in third place.
But Melandri was delighted as his victory from 14th on the grid after a wet qualifying session on Saturday, maintained Italy's winning streak with the country's riders taking the last 12 races.
"It was like the 125s," he grinned after a race that saw the top three and Pedrosa jostling for the lead.
Hayden's seventh successive podium finish was still not the top step he was looking for but the championship lead was a consolation.
"We had a few little issues," said the American, revealing that the tyre warmer had melted to a front brake disc on the grid.
"I don't want to sound like I'm making a lot of excuses, but nonetheless I'm pretty lucky to escape with what I got.
"Bottom line, I didn't get it done today. It was exciting, everybody riding super-aggressive but nobody really doing any bone-head moves," said Hayden."
"To be leading the world championship is an accomplishment and I'm proud of it."
Japan's Hiroshi Aoyama won the 250cc race, cruising past a crash between the two leaders on the last lap. Spaniard Hector Barbera kept his bike up after the collision with Alex de Angelis and pulled in second, followed by Andrea Dovizioso of Italy.
Spanish riders swept the first three spots in the 125cc category, with Hector Faubel finishing first. Faubel, who crashed in Turkey last year, was joined on the podium by Alvaro Bautista and Sergio Gadea, all riding Aprilias for the Master-MVA Aspar team.
